The Best Parts An Interview with GRRRL Parts
So I had a chance to sit down with one of Houston’s most popular DJ duos and ask them a few questions. Aside from being a pair of bad ass chicas, they were also voted Houston Press’s 2010 best club DJ. With a little effort and a whole lot of fun it’s no wonder these girls can bring the “house” down, even if they aren’t on the decks.
Where are you girls originally from?
Gaby: I was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala and moved here about 8 or 9 years ago.
Natasha: I was born and raised here in Houston (with the exception of living in Miami for a year or so lol) but my mom is from Brazil and my dad from Mexico.
How long have you been DJing?
Gaby: For almost 3 years.
Where did the name GRRRL Parts Come From?
Natasha: Well, when I decided that I wanted to DJ too we determined that we needed a collaborative name for the both of us seeing as her name was Gab-E and mine was Natasha Ninjason. So we were just spitting out random names and I wanted something pro-female and so then I ended up saying Girl Parts and then changed it so it’s like grrr because we’re tough and stuff ya know? (laughs)
What types of music do you like to play?
Electro, electro house, disco house, 80’s
What is your favorite track to spin?
Hmmm, let me think... wow! there are so many awesome disco & electro tracks people like to dance to and that I love playing, I can’t decide at the moment lol, I guess it depends on my set and the crowd’s vibe but I love Wolfgang Gartner, also Bag Raiders.
Any Shows Coming up?
March 4th w/Midnight Conspiracy (Chicago) at Boondocks, March 5th at War’hous Visual Studios, March 12th w/Database (Brazil) at Boondocks
-Every first Friday of the month is Trashed at Boondocks where Best Legs is the other resident DJ and we bring touring acts through there...just had our 1 year anniversary. (dance music, electro, house, dico house, etc)
-Every second & last Thursday is Haters make Us Famous at Boondocks with Damon Allen & Angie Audio as the other residents DJs...also recently had our 1 year anniversary party. (we take turns every 30 min and play a variety of music from dance to 80s & 90s to the last 30 min closing out with dub and heavy bass)
-Every 3rd Saturday is HYPE at The Backroom/Mink and that is just our party that we sometimes book touring acts and sometimes just locals and we just had our 2 year anniversary there. (wide range of dance music upstairs with always something different on the patio)
-Every Sunday at Boondocks is the Free BBQ day from 5pm-10pm, $1 wells until 8pm, $2.50 drafts all night. I play a more Indie dance, Classic Rock, 80s, disco & some chill electro to relax & hang out on the last day before most people have to go back to work.
I’ve been to hype more than a handful of times, and have enjoyed myself completely... how did this event come about?
Well after we took a little vacation to L.A., we went out on a Tuesday night and that place was packed and bumping, so much fun, and we were saying why can’t Houston be like this? LOL So when we came home we had it set in mind we wanted to throw awesome parties and after a lot of hard work we finally started to do it. A lot of people also didn’t and don’t realize that pretty much all of the parties that happen at The Backroom/Mink, the people throwing the party are the people paying for all of the acts that play there, so in going to any shows that take place there you’re supporting your people of Houston in trying to make this city better by offering everyone a good time and sometimes DJs you’d otherwise never get to jam out and party to unless you went and did it in L.A., New York and Europe.
What other things do you grrrls do?
Gaby: Aside from all of the events, we are actually going to start learning how o remix & then eventually one day produce so hopefully we get at least a remix o two done before this year is up.
Natasha: Well I’ve been getting more involved in my artwork and being part of more art shows (where our schedules can permit) and I’m loving it.
Do you grrrls have any mixes online that our readers can hear? if so where?
Not currently, I just got a new recorder so I will have one soon so just stay informed on our blog or FB.
