Put on Your Dancing Shoes Breakfast with Glasnost
This day in age, not knowing how to dance can really put a damper on a good time. Quite possibly one of the best bands our fine city has to offer. Glasnost is sure to give International bands like Cut//Copy and Digitalism a run for their money. Get ready, move your feet, and shake your shoulders! Glasnost is sure to shock your senses with thier brand of modern electric disco.
How did Glasnost come about.
Brandon: The name came from Russian festival we played a while back. We really didn’t have a name back then, and I am not sure if they do the festival anymore... Since it was our first official show we decided to go with a Russian name.
Dan: Its an English interpretation of a Cyrillic word that means openness it was a Russian foreign policy. We chose it a first because it sounded cool and then we sort of became the name, with our 80s influences which we all love and also the idea of openness.
So do you guys do any covers?
Brandon: Yeah we do a Duran Duran cover?
Oh yeah which one?
Dan: Planet Earth (band laughs) yeah this was one of the songs that I always wanted to play in a DJ set but due to it not being produced that great it was pretty hard to play in my set. So we decided lets cover it, and we do our own version of it.
Do you guys have it recorded?
Brandon: We have it recorded but not officially. Its not available to the public.
Dan: Its sort of a marketing ploy! We’re trying to get Duran Duran to sue us (laughs) it worked for the verve, why can’t it work for us (band laughs)
So you guys have anything new out?
Brandon: Yeah our new single Corridor is scheduled to drop March 4th.
So who writes all your songs? Is it a collaboration of everyone?
Dan: Actually it started out that way, but now its mostly “B”.
Brandon: Yeah we have sorta’ gone more in that direction, that I sorta basicly write it, and when we take into the group situation real things are like hammered out so that things work smoother.
Dan: It’s more of a cohesive sort of sound. Brandon churns them out pretty fast. We all sit as a group and pick and choose and then pick the ones we like.
Brandon: It started out I had a mix-tape with like like 30 second to a minute long snipits of songs ranging from straight up “she’s lost control” to super synthy sorta stuff.. Just to sorta get to where everyone was leaning toward a certain thing.
So how long have you guys been together?
Brandon: As Glasnost.. I don’t know. I was originally the drummer, I only started singing out of necessity. We didn’t have a singer. Our original Singer had this sort of punk rock straight edge or a sheltered background and we really didn’t want that kind of singing..
Dan: We held try outs and nothing work.
Brandon: So I became the singer
Dan: So about 6 years. Jeff has been with us for about 6 months now.
So what happens in the next 10 years when disco is dead again?
Brandon: I don’t know, I think we are gonna keep the plug, plugged into their necks.
Dan: Definitely, even us as a band have changed what we are into, whats out there and what we are tuned into, so that’s going to definitely influence what direction we will go.
Jeff: Especially me, I’m the new guy. Relatively speaking. I wasn’t around for the makings of the songs. Musically where I come from is progressive and death metal. Found them on a Craigslist ad that said looking for drummer. Synthpop? I said Ok!
Brandon: Turns out that style of drumming fits pretty well.
Jeff: There’s no blast beast or anything...
You should give this guy a drum solo...
Dan: So in ten years we may go into a Death Metal direction.. who knows. (laughs)
Since this Interview Glasnost has gone on to recruit ex Factory Party Guitarist, Lance Bridges. Their first performance with the new and full line up happened at this years Main Street Block Party. They had everyone upstairs at The Backroom Dancing their asses off. It’s a shame that their set was cut short, as their crowd had not had enough. If you would like to catch these guys live you have to come to the Perfect 10s art show on March 5th at War’hous Visual Studios, which will also be the bands new single release party as well.
